A humble circular renovation

The renovation of the house is characterised by two simple interventions: on the one hand, a revaluation of the main structure by freeing it from the various annexes. These are dismantled and serve as a local source of materials. From here, the conversion begins, with our first thought always starting from the existing: using the current structures and recuperated building materials as much as possible. Thus, the bricks are used for the repair of the basement stairs and the finishing of the terrace. The marble is given new life in window sills and repairs of the fireplaces, doors and cupboard tops, which are incorporated into new built-in cupboards or door openings.

Four years later, the renovation is to be expanded by the addition of a new CLT rooftop extension. The prefabricated structure will be delivered on-site in parts to be assembled efficiently after dismantling the existing roof. The height of the ridge is to be aligned with the lower adjacent house, while the street-side ledge is raised in order to allow for a low ribbon-window. The new third storey contains a bedroom placed in a large and flexible space. Between the new structural walls and the existing adjacent facades, additional functions are provided. A large triangular window with a view of the Basilica of Koekelberg creates additional headroom, which is necessary for the staircase, and provides an even and constant northern light in the room.
